Music by The Piano Brothers

William H. McCartney, age 89, of Pittsfield, IL passed away on Friday, August 10, 2018 at his residence.  He was born on April 5, 1929 in the family home near Summer Hill, the son of Frank and Isabel McGreevy McCartney.  He married Mary Fitzsimmons September 30, 1961 in Petersburg, IL and she survives.

After high school, Bill was drafted into the Korean War on March 16, 1951, and proudly served his country for two years in the 503rd Battalion at Ft. Bragg, NC as an MP.
After returning from the service, he worked on the family farm and became involved in Illinois Rural Youth.  He gained many lifelong friends from across the state in this organization and even served on the state level.  They continued to meet many years later through the annual summer picnics.
Bill would always say the day after John F. Kennedy was elected, he gave Mary a ring and they were married a year later.  It was in 1962 when Bill became a member and chairman of the Illini Hospital Board.  He served on this board for 15 years before leaving in 1977.  His goal for the hospital board was always to keep the hospital “in the black” as he would say.
He was also a founding member of the Rural Water Board in 1972 and was very proud that they were able to meet the water demands of the people in the rural area where he lived.
Bill always loved politics and was a lifelong member of the Democratic party, starting his service in 1953.  He served on the Pike County Board for 12 years from 1957 – 1969.  He was also on the Board of Supervisors for 12 years.  In 1969, he became a Precinct Committeeman and served in that capacity until recently.  He was most proud when his son was elected States Attorney.  He walked every parade and knocked on every door in Pike County over the years.
Bill was a farmer in Pike County for many years, living in the house where he was born.  He kept an office there and sold real estate before eventually becoming a real estate broker, and had a successful business for many years.  He was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, and was on the committee that built the parish hall as well.
He loved Saukee Basketball, football and baseball and never missed a sporting event that his children or grandchildren were involved in.  He also was a great St. Louis Cardinal fan.

Survivors include his wife Mary and five children;  William H. McCartney Jr. (wife Cristy) of Pittsfield; Teresa Goetten (husband Edward) of Jerseyville;  Frank McCartney (wife JoGari) of Pittsfield;  David McCartney (wife Becky) of Jacksonville, IL, and Don McCartney (wife Jennifer) of Homer Glen, IL.  Seven grandchildren also survive; Austin, Isabella, Gracie, Sophia, Lincoln, Hudson, and Christian, with another on the way.  Bill is also survived by his brother Dan McCartney and a sister Agnes Simms.  He was preceded by his parents, a brother Frank and  sisters Marietta McCartney and Carrie Simmons.

A Mass will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church on Tuesday, August 14 at 10:00 AM with Father Mark Schulte officiating.  Burial will be at the Calvary Cemetery in Pittsfield.  Visitation will be held on Monday evening from 4 – 7 PM at the Niebur Funeral Home in Pittsfield.  Memorials are suggested to St. Mary’s  or the Great River Honor Flight.  Niebur Funeral Home in Pittsfield is handling the arrangements.  Online condolences may be left at www.nieburfh.com.
