Music by The Piano Brothers

E. Pauline Zumwalt, 86, of Pittsfield, IL passed away on Saturday, January 27, 2018 at her residence.  Pauline was born on February 24, 1931 in Pleasant Hill, IL to Bryan and Irma Roberts Smith.  She married Burdette Zumwalt on June 4, 1949 in Pittsfield, IL and he preceded her in death.

Pauline was self-employed and very much enjoyed cleaning the homes of Vera and Warren Barrow, Mary and Thomas Bunting, Violet Shulman, Geneva Windler, Dick and Katie Niebur, Ed and Mary Ellen Schimmel, and many others.  She also cleaned for the doctor's offices and overall enjoyed the friendships that developed through cleaning.  Pauline was a seamstress and made all of her daughter's clothes for years.  She also liked quilting and made many quilts.  She enjoyed putting tiny piece puzzles together and doing crossword puzzles. She liked gardening, canning, making jams and jellies, and especially dill pickles.  She enjoyed being outside, working in her yard, raising flowers, and tending to the hummingbirds.  Pauline loved to watch the St. Louis Cardinals and the North Carolina Tar Heels, but was an even bigger fan of watching her children and grandchildren in sports activities.  She also liked watching Pat Summitt coach the University of Tennessee Lady Vols basketball team.   Pauline loved to cook for her family and always made sure to make each person's favorite dish when they came over.  From homemade noodles to a big pot of mac and cheese, whatever they wanted, she fixed.  She really enjoyed having her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren over and loved the holidays.

She is survived by two sons, Bryan Edson "Ed" (Kathy) Zumwalt of Nebo, IL and Marcus (Stacey Adrain) Burdette Zumwalt of Pittsfield, IL; a daughter, Nina Loreen Zumwalt of Pittsfield, IL; five grandchildren, Matthew Todd Cawthon, Lance Zumwalt, Chris Zumwalt, Cree Zumwalt Coffey, and Alexana Koisher; nine great grandchildren, Keaton McAllister, Jordan Cawthon, Zach Cawthon, Cooper Zumwalt, Lyla Zumwalt, Gabriella Zumwalt, Paz Zumwalt, Luca Zumwalt, and Greyson Zumwalt; two great great grandchildren, Gracie McAllister and Owen Markert; a niece, Kolleen (David) Spencer; nephews, Shannon (Kay) Marshall, Steven Smith, and Andy (Marge) Smith; and a sister-in-law, Dora Zumwalt.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Burdette; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Forrest (Loucille "Duke") Smith and Robert (Gin) Smith; a sister and brother-in-law, Lois (Ray) Marshall; brother-in-law, Gene Zumwalt; nieces, Debbie Lynn Smith and Melinda Smith; and nephews, Ronnie Marshall and Terry Lee Smith.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 1, 2018 at 1:00 PM at the Niebur Funeral Home in Pittsfield.  There will be a visitation prior to the service from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the funeral home.  Interment will be at a later date.  Memorials are suggested to the Pike County Cancer Group or Saukee Nation.  Online condolences can be left to the family at www.nieburfh.com.  Niebur Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Pauline was a keeper! Not only did she keep house - she took care of everyone that she thought she could help! She became my hero when I first got acquainted with her and would take on the whole world if she thought someone was against her family. She had real Saukee pride and kept us all on our toes when Marcus and Todd were in high school. Love and God's blessing to her family.

Dear Marcus and family,

I was so sorry to hear of Pauline’s passing. She was truly a special woman and friend to many. I can’t remember how many years I came bounding into my home and seeing her there with a smile and a hug. She was an important part of our family during both great and trying times. She will be missed but never forgotten as long as those of us who loved her keep her in our hearts. Our thoughts are with all of you.

All our love, Amy Barrow Halbrook and the Barrow Family
