Robert Jerome Baker, 93 of Petersburg, formerly of New Canton passed away Wednesday, July 5, 2017 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.  Robert was born on May 2, 1924 in New Canton, a son of Jerome and Grace Earls Baker.  He married Shirley Hoskins on November 18, 1944; she preceded him in death on December 26, 1999.

In earlier years Robert worked for the Holsom Company as a heavy equipment operator.  While a resident at the Countryside Estates in Petersburg Robert became their ambassador and director of traffic. He attended the Pittsfield Nazarene Church and was a member of the New Canton Fire Department.  Robert was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan, enjoyed fishing, had a love for cars and enjoyed hanging out at Pike County Glass.  In earlier years Robert bowled on the Sheppard Electronic bowling team and was considered a very good bowler. He and Shirley enjoyed camping and traveling in their motor home in earlier years.  Robert was a great conversationalist.

Robert is survived by his daughter, Bonnie (Phillip "Bud") Megehe of Petersburg; two granddaughters, Melissa (Greg) Lange of Hume, IL and Stephanie (Tim) Sheppard of Elgin, IL; seven great-grandchildren, Alex Staggenborg of Springfield; Mary Grace Staggenborg of Nashville, TN; Anna Noel Staggenborg of Edwardsville; Thomas Staggenborg of Silver Springs, MD; Simon Sheppard, Samuel Sheppard, and Gwendolyn Sheppard all of Elgin and a sister, Shirley (Cecil) Moore of Quincy.  Robert was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Shirley.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 8, 2017 at the Niebur Funeral Chapel in Barry with Larry Vaughn officiating.  Visitation will be held from 10:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.  Interment will be in the Shearer Cemetery near New Canton.

Memorials are suggested to be made to the Athens Christian Church.  Condolences may be sent to the family at www.nieburfh.com.  The Niebur Funeral Chapel in Barry is handling the service

Aunt Bonnie, Jim and I are so saddened at the loss of your father. We remember peeling potatoes and snapping green beans at the firehouse for the annual chicken fry each year with your dad. Love to you and Uncle Bud, the girls and grandkids. Love Jimmy and Karen Bernard
