James H ‘Jim’ Davis, 78, passed away Friday evening, May 5, 2017 at his residence in Barry, IL.  James was born in Oneida, IL, June 26, 1938 to James Leroy and Hazel Deter Davis.  He married Mary Phillips, on Valentine’s Day in 1962 at Pittsfield, IL, and she survives.

Jim had worked for Brown Shoe Company in Pittsfield for a short time before taking a job in Joliet, IL with Caterpillar as a maintenance welder.  He worked there for 30 years until his retirement in 1993.  While living up north, he became a Mason at the local lodge in Wilmington, IL and was a current member of the El Dara Lodge # 338 A.M. & F.M.  Jim was a veteran of the US Army and was a longtime and very active member of the Barry American Legion Post 222 in Barry. He was a member of the Pittsfield Christian Church.  James loved to fish with his grandson, and he liked to travel.  One of his more memorable trips was to Iceland, to visit his daughter Rebecca, who was stationed there while serving in the US Navy.  He also enjoyed woodworking, and made many beautiful canes and other pieces, which he willingly gave away to those in need.

Survivors include his loving wife, Mary, a son Curtis Davis of Barry, and 2 daughters; Rosemary and Rebecca Davis, both of Barry.  Also surviving are a grandson Brian Joseph (Lindsey) Davis of Beardstown, IL and 2 great grandsons, Logan Howard and Mason Henry Davis.  James was preceded in death by his parents, a great-grandchild Micah Joseph, a brother Roy Jr, and 2 sisters; Wanda Schutz and Wilma Smith.

There will be a memorial service at 4:00 P.M., Wednesday, May 17 at Niebur Funeral Chapel with Pastor Michael TenEyck officiating.  Military Rites will be accorded immediately following the service by the Barry American Legion Post #222.   A visitation will follow from 4:30 to 6:00, with  Masonic services being held at 6:00 P.M. conducted by the El Dara Masonic Lodge #388. In keeping with his generous spirit, James and his family have donated his remains to medical research.  Memorials are suggested to El Dara Masonic Lodge #388 and may be left C/O Niebur Funeral Chapel, PO Box 36, Barry, IL  62312. Jim was a great fellow to know and be with, and will be sadly missed by all.
Jim is not leaving us, he is just moving on to a better place to be with his new friends.

Mary and family,
So sorry for your loss. Jim was always such a happy person although I only knew him from when Rick joined the American Legion. I could tell when I saw you two together that he was a very loving husband and father. And I'll tell you Mary, like you told me when Rick passed, angels are amongst us and I believe Jim was and is one of them. Bless you and your family. My thoughts and prayers are with you all during this most difficult time.

It is with great sadness that I learned of Jim's passing on Wed. May 10 at a meeting of Wilmington Masonic Lodge #208 A.F. & A.M. I considered him a friend and a dear brother of the fraternity and feel I am a better person having known him. He was always a delight to be around.
May you be comforted in this time of sorrow Mary and family.
